Les food trucks sont omniprésents à New York, en particulier à Astoria, dans le Queens, un quartier qui symbolise plus que tout autre le creuset américain. Une telle diversité linguistique et culturelle n'existe nulle part ailleurs. Avec, à la clé, des spécialités culinaires du monde entier.
Après avoir installé un premier véhicule à Astoria, l’Egyptien Mohammed Afifi vient d’acheter un food truck d’occasion qu’il aménage avec son frère Ibrahim et une poignée d’amis. Ils se préparent d’arrache-pied à la visite d’inspection qui, ils l’espèrent, se soldera par la délivrance d’une licence. Dès que l’autorisation tant attendue aura été apposée sur le camion, ils rechercheront un emplacement approprié à Manhattan. Car, si Astoria est considéré comme le royaume des food trucks, Manhattan demeure le graal, le symbole ultime de réussite. À l’instar de Mohammed et d‘Ibrahim, Tenzing Phunsur se bat lui aussi pour réaliser son rêve américain. Ce fils de réfugiés tibétains aspire à rendre la cuisine de l’Himalaya aussi populaire que la gastronomie chinoise. Installé depuis un mois au coin d’une rue animée d’Astoria, il tente d’attirer l’attention des passants sur son offre culinaire. Certains de ses confrères ont déjà atteint leur but, tels le King of Falafel, le King of Souvlaki ou le Rey del Taco, qui sont entrés au panthéon des food trucks. Ils gèrent plusieurs snacks ambulants ainsi que des restaurants, employant des proches et des amis. Pour eux aussi, la voie du succès a été semée d’embûches. Ils ont parfois été en bute à la discrimination, et ce même dans un quartier aussi cosmopolite qu’Astoria.
